Alaska Gap Analysis Project

Models from the Alaska Gap Analysis Project (AKGAP) were developed in 2014 as part of a nation-wide program administered by USGS to assess the extent to which species and vegetation communities are represented within the protected areas. GAP analyses have been used to assess conservation status and the need for protection in light of landscape changes, habitat loss, and climate change, and informing decisions about land management priorities. The project produced spatially explicit models to predict the range and distribution of terrestrial vertebrate species in Alaska to support analysis of conservation status.

The AKGAP Final Report and Species Atlas are available for download through this site. Range models and Final Distribution Models for Alaska bird and mammal species are available below: Click on Alaska Gap List of Models CSV for the download links. To acquire additional inductive and deductive distribution models (in raster format), please complete a data request form and provide the species name and the type of model you are interested in. A list of available models is provided below.

The AKGAP Project was a collaboration among several partners, including the Environmental Science & Geography Programs & Spatial Ecosystem Analysis Lab (SEALAB) at the University of Alaska Southeast and the EWHALE lab-Biology and Wildlife Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
